Sometimes I need to get away from the gluten free, locally sourced, farm to table foods of San Francisco. In this case, 45 minutes away to Concord to Patty's Original Cheese Zombies. Zombies are super cheesy filled buns made popular by the public school in this area.
Patty's doesn't have a website up yet and they've only been open for a short time, but this tiny shop was crowded and some of the items were sold out!
The hot link and cheese zombie was the only zombie I ordered that wasn't dome shaped.
Inside a spicy hot link and gooey American cheese. Good, but I wish this one had a little more cheese.
Most of the zombies are round and their shape and size reminds me of a baked pork bun. Upon ordering each of these zombies come in the perfect temperature. Just hot enough that the cheese oozes out and not too hot that you can eat them right away without burning your hands or mouth.
The pizza zombie has cheese, sausage, and pepperoni stuffed inside, almost like a pizza pocket. It has a really good pizza flavor.
The cheese zombie is one of the original zombies sold at the public school cafeterias. I think the zombies with cheese are the way to go. The cheese to bread ratio is perfect and its amazing to see how much cheese gets stuffed into these buns. Somewhat like eating a puffy grilled cheese sandwich, it tastes like food of the 80s before Jamie Oliver invaded.
The jalapeno, ham, and cheese was a nice twist on the original zombies. Salty ham with the jalapeno lending a surprising kick made this zombie one of the favorites.
