Before there was Bi-Rite, Humphry Slocombe, and all the other fancy ice cream shop, there was Mitchell's. Probably the best known and oldest San Francisco ice cream institution, this ice cream shop is known for its classic flavors. Make sure when you first arrive to grab a number. The ticket dispenser is on your left side as you enter.
#92 - Ube Ice Cream at Mitchell's Ice Cream- 7x7's 2012 Top 100 |
Besides the classics, Mitchell's is also known for their Asian/Filipino flavors. They have coconut, mango, guava, etc. Also, they have halo halo here. I decided to try their ube (bottom) and their avocado (top). I've had avocado ice cream before and this one is more rich and creamy than others I've had. Also, it wasn't as sweet. I've never had ube (purple yam) ice cream before and I'm not sure if it was my thing. A little starchy tasting for me to really enjoy.
Of course, I have to taste the classics as well! Chocolate (bottom) and mint ice cream with oreos (top). The chocolate here is amazing. If you are a chocoholic this ice cream is your mecca. It's super chocolatey right down to the last drop. The mint chocolate ice cream had huge chunks of oreo cookies through. Mitchell's is the way to go for some classic, ultra creamy ice cream.
